Another video offering insights into the use and function of the Pentax 67 system from someone with no experience or learned knowledge about the camera or its operation. I.E., a waste of time. The first 40% of the video is devoted to a circular discussion of the Pentax;s limitation of shooting daylight balanced flash. (That not what she says, but it's what she is doing.) HInt: as a user of the Pentax for 40 years, I'll assure her that using it to shoot daylight balance flash handheld is a waste of time and effort. There were two lenses which incorporate leaf shutters to do this, but they are a frustrating pain in the ass to use (speaking from personal experience). They are also both second class optically compared to their non-leaf shutter alternatives when shot as a normal lens. The Pentax 67 does everything else so well, that it can be forgiven this shortcoming. Also, she undertakes to compare the color rendition of a Pentax 67 with a Mamiya RB (?), using different film types in the cameras. What is that supposed to show? Amazing.

So, she wants tips on why Phoenix 200 prints so badly on RA-4 color printing paper. Okay, here's a few. C-41 films normally have the red-orange mask for a reason. it's not just make them harder to print. It's there to color correct the image dyes in the negative to match the requirements of the RA-4 processed color paper. Phoenix 200 omits that printing mask entirely, so it is clear that Harmon has never intended the film to be RA-4 printed. They intentionally limited its use to digital scanning/printing, which is still inhibited because film scanners are pre-programmed to deal with the C-41 color mask, and not finding the mask upsets the accuracy of the scan process to some degree. Another reason for the failure of Phoenix 200 as an RA-4 printing source is that the color palette is grossly uneven, in that some colors (reds) are very strong, while others are very weak. It's very hard, probably impossible, to color balance around these issues with the technology limitation of RA-4 printing. Therefore, you can get some saturated colors with RA-4 printing, but they just won't accurately reflect the real colors of the source. You will also find it impossible to print both highlight and shadow details, because of wildly excessive contrast. These technical problems are uncorrected in Phoenix, and you'd need digital post-processing to recover from them. While all of this may seem strange, the relative number of people making wet-darkroom RA-4 prints today is so small that Harmon's decision to ignore their needs when developing this produce, presumably to save money, is fairly understandable. Summary: As evidenced by the print results in the video, RA-4 printing of Phoenix is a waste of time and money.

You did well covering all that in 48 hours - I've lived here 20-odd years and I'm still finding new things. It's a great city with fabulous, creative, talented people.

I'm from Korea! I watched the video so impressively. It helped me a lot and I was able to overcome my fear of using the lights. I have one question. When I see the video, it looks a little blue-toned in the studio, but I wonder if the blue light was shot by turning on the color filter or controlled the color temperature.

I just got one, love it so much. Agree so much about it being an slr. I couldn’t take my rb67 anywhere easily.

The 105 is a fantastic lens. Check out Hannes Caspar, most of his work is shot on P67. If you want to push it to the next level, look for Pentacon Six lenses, converted for P67. For the 105, I got myself a quick focus ring, big recommendation.

Sooo question: When you say the 1/30s flash sync means that more ambient light gets captured, that is the case because during those 1/30s that the shutter is open the flash fires somewhere during that time, but only lights the scene for less than 1/30s, which means during the rest of that time the film captures the light that there without the flash? and faster speeds are more congruent with the actual time the flash illuminates the scene?

Better get one now before prices go back up 🥴

The Viewfinder on the Pentax 67 only shows 90% of the frame. That might be why your composition is a bit different to your other shots.

You hsve metering prism on the camera. So, never take the prism off without first taking the lens off. There is a tiny chain that acuates the aperture and if you take theprism off irst it will break the chain and ruin your day. Guess how I know this !!!

love the 35 mm - medium format way of shooting insight... I was just reflecting on the way that I stopped shooting more "spontaneous" photos since I picked up my Rb67 and left my 35 mm camera on the shelf. It's important to not be a "slave" of each format

Years ago, I actually held a Pentax 6x7 in my hands, in US terms the negative is 2 1/4" x 2 3/4" rectangular format, it was really heavy. The standard lens was 127mm, you can buy a 55mm wide angle. It shoots 120/220 roll film 10/20 exposures, to shoot 220 paperless film, you turn the pressure plate 90°. ETA btw some SLRs from that era, don't show 100% of the frame in the viewfinder, it is more like 98-99%, so sometimes you have too much headroom.

Pentax 67 is excellent choice! Congrats! I have that wooden handle for left hand attached to it, so when shooting portrait I'm pushing it up with my left hand instead of pulling it up with my right hand. I also don't have the grip on right side like you do. It really depends on personal preference, I suppose. BUT! Now that you have both (Pentax and Mamiya) and will be shooting with them. I'm curious about your thoughts on both of them after few months. Which one would you choose in certain situations. Which one is your favorite after some time.

I got one a while back and had the exact same issue you're talking about with leaving too much headroom. I find it really difficult to focus with it in general and then if you remember to recompose and you're shooting with that 2.4 lens you're going to be out of focus again immediately. It's a rough learning curve for sure.

A detail many folks shooting with the Mamiya 6x7 systems might not be aware of is that there's also a conversion for depth-of-field compared with 35mm/full frame lenses. A 110mm f/2.8 lens is akin to a 55mm f/1.4 lens on 35mm/full frame. The amount of light is still very much that of any f/2.8 aperture, but since you can get so much closer to the subject for the same magnification, the effective depth-of-field is the same as a full-frame lens that's two f-stops faster. So, the 50mm f/4 lens for the Mamiya RZ67 is like a 25mm f/2.8 on full frame. It won't give as shallow a depth-of-field as the 110mm that's two stops faster and more than two times the focal length, but it's still shallower than its f/4 denomination might suggest. It's great for environmental portraiture. The 65mm f/4 (full-frame equivalent of a 33mm f/2.8) from the RB67 that still works great with the RZ67 is also a solid alternative, especially since it's considerably less expensive, and its shutter is completely mechanical, so it'll work at all speeds even if the RZ67's battery goes dead. This can be a life saver. :)

I heard a lot of photographers use 85mm lenses.
